Cooper ISD Thursday evacuated both the high and middle schools after a bomb threat was made over the social media platform Snapchat.

Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith confirmed that a student from Cooper ISD had received a “snap” from an individual that said they were building a bomb and “going to take care of those who made fun of me.”

“The student from Cooper ISD went straight to school officials who quickly phoned in the threat,” said Smith. “Our first intent when receiving this call was to validate its authenticity and credibility.”

Smith said his office was assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers and Criminal Divison investigators, EMS, Duff County Fire, as well as, Garland and Frisco Bomb Units

He further stated that it didn’t take too long to identify that the number and the IP address linked to that particular Snapchat account which was from the Commerce area.

“There was a following snap that advised the suspect was on their way. So both the high school and middle school evacuated to the elementary school for safety,” he said.

Cooper ISD posted on their Facebook account Friday morning thanking law enforcement all those involved for their quick efforts in keeping staff and students safe.

“At this time, our Delta Co Sheriff’s Office and state officials are confident they have apprehended the subject and that the subject poses absolutely no threat to local students or school buildings,” they said. “They have also shared great compliments for the quick, decisive action and safe practices of all of our staff. In the words of the state officer in responding to this investigation, “this is a school I would want my kids to attend.”’

A call-out for parents had been issued advising school was canceled for Friday, Jan. 31, while everyone took a moment to rest and recuperate.

“Hopefully, our students and staff will get over their sicknesses at the same time. Looking forward to seeing everyone Monday,” they further stated. “Thank you for your patience and diligence as we strive to take the best possible care of all students and staff.”

Smith did confirm that the threat had covered several schools and a juvenile had been identified and taken into custody. This student was also absent from school on Thursday.

“We do believe the threat to be a hoax. However, it is still being investigated,” said Smith.
