Allyson Felix, an Olympic sprinter and new mother, has just smashed gold medal-winning track star Usain Bolt’s record for most gold medals won.

Felix, whom had just given birth a mere 10-months earlier, was competing at the World Championships when she won her 12th gold medal.

The 33-year old sprinter secured the medal after finishing first in the 4x400m mixed-gender relay as part of Team USA.

This achievement now pushes her past Bolt’s record for the most gold medals of any athlete at the track and field World Championships.

Felix, after giving birth via c-section at 32 weeks, returned to training only 8-months ago. She was also one of many female athletes Nike sponsored that fought for their rights to continue garnering their sponsorships from the company after the company allegedly penalized them for being pregnant.

After the women spoke out, the company said it would do more to protect female athletes’ pay during and after pregnancy.

“I think everything I went through this year … it just brings it all back that it’s so much bigger than myself,” Felix, who went on to become the first sponsored athlete for Athleta, told ESPN at the world championships in Doha, Qatar.

Reports further suggest that not only is this win a great success for the track star, but it has also helped pave the road for future female athletes to continue their drive for success should they choose to become pregnant.
