The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are urging dog owners not to purchase pig ear pet treats over growing salmonella contamination concerns.

Lennox Iternational Inc. issued a voluntary recall of its Natural Pig ears, and Pet Supplies Plus issued a recall of bulk pig ears after the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development found the presence of Salmonella in tested samples.

The companies are working together with state agencies to investigate 127 human cases of salmonellosis related to multiple types of Salmonella, which they suspect may be linked to pig ear pet treats.

According to Lennox International Inc., the recalled products affected where shipped to nationwide distributors and/or retail stores from November 1st 2018, to July 3rd, 2019.

The product comes in an 8-pack branded pouch under UPC 742174 995163, 742174994166 or packaged individually shrink wrapped under UPC 0385384810, and 742174P35107. All UPC codes are located on the front label of the package. Individually shrink-wrapped packages may be labelled with “Lennox” or without brand information.

Pet Supplies Plus said, bulk pig ears were distributed to Pet Supplies Plus stores in AL, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI and WV. Bulk pig ears were stocked in open bins. Prepackaged branded pig ears are not included in this voluntary recall.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The FDA and CDC recommend throwing away any pig ear treats that you may have at home and to make sure that they are disposed of in a secure container where other people and animals won’t come into contact with them. They also recommend washing your hands thoroughly after touching pig ear treats and disinfecting any surfaces that may have come into contact with them.
