“Go for Donnie” one more time, as the Paris Fire Department recently honored their fallen brother at a department award ceremony.

Layton ‘Donnie’ Slade Baker was awarded the Paris Fire Department Firefighter of the Year award posthumously and was accepted by members of his family.

“That award meant more to my family and me than we could ever describe. That award showed us that Slade had a huge family in Paris, who recognized him and loved him for who he truly was,” said his sister Kelsye Faith Baker.

“He was my pride and joy,” said Kelly, Baker’s mother, “and we were all so honored that they thought to award him this year.”

Baker was nominated for the award by Captain Dale Reed, who said he was an exemplary example of the award.

“Slade was always upbeat. Not only did he keep morale up, but he was always one to take the initiative, take pride in his work, and promoted positivity both in and out of uniform,” Reed explained.

“To say he was deserving of this award is understated. My brother always gave more than he had to because he believed that was what was needed,” said Conor Tarno.

“We as a family are beyond proud to have been allowed to accept this award on Slade’s behalf,” said dad Craig. “Not only were we filled with pride for Slade to be given this award, we all now have our hearts in Paris with the community and fire department for their love shown to us for our son, brother, uncle, and friend.”

Baker succumbed to injury from a single motor vehicle accident on Oct 20, of this year.

The 24-year old firefighter was not only said to have what’s known as a servant’s heart but was said by all who knew him that he was born to be a firefighter.

Also recognized within the department for 20-years of service were Deputy Chief Bob Rast from A-Shift and Captain James Dority from B-Shift.

“It was an honor to be recognized for my time with the department. I enjoy every shift working alongside a great team that always strives to serve the community better each day,” said Dority.

Of the recognition given to those three men for a job well done, Baker’s stepmother Heather summed it up for everyone on the department as saying, “In the end, the measure of achievements is not winning an award, it’s knowing that the award you won was well achieved,”
