Local law enforcement agencies support fallen officers dream

“When a police officer is killed, it’s not just an agency that loses an officer, it’s an entire nation”

On Sunday, July 22nd, 2018, Kent, Washington, police officer Diego Moreno was killed in the line of duty during a pursuit of a shooting suspect.

“With this job, many often struggle with the balance of family and work. Whatever that formula is, Diego knew it and lived it. He was a phenomenal cop and an even better father,” said Brian Lewis in a Facebook post.

Lewis explained in this post that Diego collected police patches from around the world as a way to connect with fellow officers.

He shared the collection with his kids and told his son that one day, the collection would be handed down to him.

“Unfortunately, that day has come way too soon,” said Lewis.

In a symbol of solidarity, law enforcement agencies from across the country, including our own in Lamar County, are sending patches to Diego’s family in hopes of continuing the tradition for his children.

“Collecting patches is a hobby, but also a reinforcement for those in this business that there are many many more brothers and sisters out there working,” said Paris Chief of Police Bob Hundley. “In this case, what a gift for the kids to remember their dad.”

Reno Chief of Police Jeremy Massey added, “We are honored to send a patch to the child of a fallen officer. It is sometimes hard for a child to comprehend the sacrifice of a law enforcement parent and we would like him to know that it is noticed and not in vain.”

North Lamar ISD Chief of Police Mike Boaz also sent a patch saying, “We want to send this to Officer Moreno’s family in honor of his life as a police officer and his dedication to family and the citizens he served. God bless them all.”
