Experts encourage citizens to still file tax returns despite potential delays in refunds

Despite the partial government shutdown potentially delaying tax refunds, experts say don’t delay in filing your tax return.

“Those getting a return should not delay filing because of the shutdown because it could delay it more,” said co-owner of Elite Business Experts Darlene Johnson.

Now moving into the 14th day of partial government shutdown, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has yet to release any possible contingency plans regarding tax filing season and the effects of the shutdown.

TurboTax released a statement also encouraging filers to not wait, “Filers can prepare their tax returns now and beginning Jan. 4, TurboTax will securely store completed returns for transmission to the IRS.”

And despite possible tax return delays, there aren’t known to be delays for individuals that are expecting to pay towards taxes this filing season.

This year also marks the first year that filing under the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will be taking place, leaving plenty of questions and little answers for filing Americans everywhere.

The IRS staff, due to the shutdown has been reduced down to only a piddly 12% and when called for a statement the automated message states, “welcome to the IRS. Live telephone assistance is not available at this time. Normal operations will resume as soon as possible.”
