Keeping your pets safe during Fourth of July celebrations

As Fourth of July celebrations kick off tonight in Lamar County and continue through next week, it’s important to make sure your pets stay safe.

More dogs run away on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year – and fireworks are largely to blame. The American Humane Association estimates more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States each year.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping your pets safe over the Fourth of July:

  • Running away is a survival instinct for dogs, so make sure your dog or cat is wearing its collar.
  • If your dog or cat is home alone during Fourth of July celebrations, make sure it has its favorite toy and a small, cozy area inside to take comfort in.
  • Keep windows and curtains closed, if possible and lock/close doors so they stay inside.
  • Drown out the sound of fireworks with noise in the background like a TV or radio.
  • Take your dog for a long walk shortly before fireworks so it gets tired and uses up most of its energy.

Should your dog or cat run away during Fourth of July celebrations, contact your local vet or pet humane association to see if it’s been found and dropped off there.
