Dr. Gaylen Glenn Hayes (72) with his family by his side, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2019 at Baylor Medical Center Dallas from complications due to prostate cancer.

He was beloved and respected by his family, friends, and patients for a life defined by deep intelligence, compassion, and integrity. Gaylen’s career reflected a relentless quest to improve the health of his patients, and he demonstrated a personal care and concern for everyone he treated.

Gaylen was born on November 19, 1946 in Watsonville, California to James Glenn Hayes and Ollene James, joining older sister Sharon (Fait) and older brother Gary to complete a loving family of five. Gaylen grew up in Santa Rosa, California and married Karen Ann Farmer, his high school sweetheart, on September 3, 1966. He and his young bride moved to Sacramento, California where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Sacramento State University. Being one who subscribed to the thought that you’re never too old to learn, Gaylen moved his young family from California to Texas and received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the age of 43.

Gaylen and Karen are the parents of six children: Aaron (Tammie) Hayes, Michael (Jase Smith) Hayes, Christine (Rob) Hill, Amy Hayes, Jason Hayes, Kelly (Dustin) Barrientes. They are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. A kind and friendly man blessed (cursed?) with a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor, Gaylen was able to lighten the mood of any situation with his stories, big warm smile and engaging laugh. He loved his family and his patients. Gaylen is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Amy.

Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled a memorial service for 2:00 pm, on Saturday, June 1st at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3060 Pine Mill Road, Paris, Texas 75460. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend as we remember the life of Dr. Gaylen Hayes.

Memorial donations in memory of Gaylen can be made to JDRF.org. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. To leave a message or tribute for the family please visit www.brighthollandfuneralhome.com
