Charles (Charlie) passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Friday morning, September 6, 2024. Charles, 88, was born on September 21, 1935, in Hoovertown, Texas, the third child of Press and Ola Welch Whitley. He graduated from Blossom High School where he excelled at baseball, and many other activities.
He was a loving husband, remarkable father, beloved brother, protector, author, storyteller, fisherman, baseball fan, Model A Ford enthusiast, builder, mentor and role model to many, who loved the Lord and his family.
Charlie married the love of his life, Velma Hall Whitley, on November 16, 1957. In their 66 years of marriage, they were blessed with four children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He proudly served the City of Paris for 28 years from 4/15/1962 thru 12/31/1989 as Patrolman, Sergeant, Assistant Chief of Police, and Chief of Police. Serving Paris as Chief of Police was one of his greatest privileges. He made many friendships that he cherished throughout his life and shared numerous stories of compassion and humor. He also served in the United States National Guard.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Press and Ola, brothers Pressie Jr., Billy Glenn, Lawrence Milton, Jerry Hunter, and sisters Dalhia Joyce and Barbara Ann.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Velma, and children, Sharon Griffin and husband Larry of Tulsa, OK, Charlene Ballaron and husband Morrie of San Angelo, TX, Angie Shepard of Longview, TX and Sherman Whitley and wife Kelly, of Paris, TX. Other
survivors include his siblings and their spouses Margaret Whitley, Martha Sue Wilson, Wanda Whitley, Russell Whitley, Corky Whitley and wife Anita. He is survived by loving grandchildren Paij and Kevin Drake, Josh & Katherine Griffin,
Corey Shepard and fiancé Tara, Morgan & Jared Russell, Collin & Macey Whitley, and Amanda Whitley. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren and his precious dog Bella. He was also dearly loved by a host of nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to Brentwood Terrace staff for the compassionate care that was extended during his final days. We are eternally grateful. His family and friends will miss his wisdom, peaceful nature, witty sense of humor and, most of all, his loving arms around us.
Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled services for 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 9th at First Baptist Church Paris with Dr. Tommy Turner and Collin Whitley officiating. Burial will follow in Knights of Honor Cemetery at Blossom.
