Catherine “Cathy” Sue Sprueill of Blossom, Texas, passed away at her home on September 4, shortly after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. She was 77 years old. Throughout her life, Cathy was a devoted wife and mother and a passionate advocate for children, education, and literacy.
Cathy was born November 5, 1948, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to W.T. “Bill” and Louise Rehders. The third of five daughters—Caroline, Cathy, Connie, Candy, and Beth—she grew up surrounded by family and the First Christian Church, where her early experiences caring for children helped shape a passion that would follow her throughout her life. While still in high school, she met Ronald “Ron” Lee Sprueill, the man with whom she would share nearly six decades of marriage and a lifetime of adventures.
Cathy and Ron married on September 23, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas. They welcomed three sons, Stephen “Wade,” Ronald “Peter,” and Joseph “Benjamin,” and over the years Ron’s career took the family to communities across Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Colorado, and California. Through every move, Cathy created a home for her family while encouraging her boys to become independent, capable, and conscientious men.
While raising her family, Cathy pursued her own education and discovered her calling in early childhood education. She began college coursework at Columbia Basin College in Richland, Washington, and later earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials from Metropolitan State College in Denver. She went on to earn a master’s degree in library science from the University of Houston–Clear Lake. Cathy’s career included teaching, working with children with special needs, volunteering and later working at Children’s Hospital Denver, and teaching at Sable Elementary in Aurora, Colorado. Wherever she worked, she was drawn especially to children who needed someone in their corner, even keeping snacks in her classroom at her own expense for students who might otherwise go hungry.
Cathy eventually combined her love of children, books, and education as the librarian at Highlands Elementary in Baytown, Texas. Later, she helped launch the first public library inside the Children’s Museum of Houston, creating a resource for parents and children that encouraged learning together. After another chapter of life in California, Cathy returned to the Children’s Museum of Houston as program director for “Tot Spot,” an interactive learning environment designed for infants, toddlers, and their parents. She also taught early childhood education and literacy to university and community college students, sharing with future educators the same passion for children and learning that had guided her own life.
Through all the moves, career changes, classrooms, libraries, and adventures, Cathy’s greatest priorities remained remarkably consistent: her family, children, education, and helping others. During her later years in the Houston area, she was also grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with and help care for her aging parents, Bill and Louise.
After Ron was forced to retire because of several health issues, Cathy and Ron moved to Paris, Texas, to be closer to Ron’s mother, Rachel, and his sister, Charlene, and her family. Cathy devoted much of the next chapter of her life to caring for those she loved, first helping care for Rachel and then becoming Ron’s primary caregiver as his health continued to decline. After Rachel’s passing, Cathy and Ron settled in Blossom, Texas, near Charlene and only a few miles from the farm in Pattonville where Ron had spent part of his youth. Although the demands of caregiving increasingly kept Cathy close to home, she remained deeply connected to family and friends. She faithfully remembered birthdays and anniversaries, sending hundreds of cards over the years, and remained especially close to her sisters. Cathy also faced significant health challenges of her own, including heart procedures and a fractured femur, but met them with the same determination and strength she brought to caring for others.
During the final months of Ron’s life, Cathy devoted herself completely to his care and fought to bring him home from the hospital so he could spend his final days in his own recliner, with his beloved glasses of wine nearby. Ron passed away at home on November 10, 2025, shortly after turning 79. Cathy soon poured her energy into planning a celebration of his life at Rainbow Lake Resort near Buena Vista, Colorado, a place filled with decades of family memories. Surrounded by their children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends, Cathy treasured what would become one final family gathering.
Only a few months later, Cathy received a preliminary diagnosis of cancer. Her condition progressed quickly, and following a brief hospital stay, she returned home under hospice care. In a fitting reflection of the love and care she had given Ron, Cathy was able to spend her own final days at home, surrounded and cared for by her son Ben and her sisters, Candy and Beth.
Cathy was deeply devoted to her family—her parents, her sisters, and relatives both near and far. She raised three independent sons and lovingly welcomed their wives into the family, embracing them as daughters of her own. Family was always at the center of Cathy’s life, and she took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and growing family. Cathy is survived by her sisters, Connie, Candy, and Beth; her sons, Wade, Pete, and Ben, and their wives, Denise, Marguerite, and Stephanie; her grandchildren, Chandler, Henry, Emma, Jacob and his wife Alyssa, Nicole and her husband Damon, Jared,
Andrew and his wife Natalie, Matthew, and Samuel; and her great-granddaughter, Cora. Cathy also held a special place in her heart for Bodhi, Denise’s grandson and one of the newest additions to the family. Though their time together was short, Cathy welcomed him with the same open heart and unconditional love she gave so freely to her entire family.
