Carl Boyce “Judge” Hasford, Jr. 83, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
Judge was born January 1,1940 in Fort Worth and adopted by C. B. and Dollie Hasford shortly after. He grew up on a large farm in Plano, near Canyon Creek with a younger sister, Pam. Suffering from disabilities due to birth complications, Judge defied medical odds and went on to live a long and full life.
Judge had a kind and gentle spirit – animals and children loved him, and he them. He told tall tales, and never met a stranger. Upon meeting you the first time, he’d tell you he remembered you, and he knew your parents, too. He always had a story, and he loved to share it in his special way.
He spent several decades at Devereux, a world-class educational and therapeutic institution outside Philadelphia, PA. He thrived there, making friends, and living semi-independently. He learned and taught sign language, explored photography, life-guarded, played basketball, and performed lawn and garden care. On visits home, Judge loved hunting and fishing, driving sports cars and buying the newest watches and cameras.
Following the death of his mother, Judge’s devoted sister Pam brought him home to Texas in 1992. Back in Plano, he spent his days working in the yard, building birdhouses, and stringing up more Christmas lights than Pam’s house could hold. He had a burgeoning lawn-mowing business in the neighborhood, and loved getting out and seeing friends from childhood at Old Settler’s reunions.
For the past five years, his nephew Richard Rheudasil and partner Cindy Asay McDowell have taken over his care and given him a loving home in Paris, surrounded by friends and family, music and laughter, dogs and cats, delicious food, and all the sweet tea he could drink.
Judge is survived by nieces Carla O’Donnell, Karen Barry, and Morgan Philpot, nephew Richard Rheudasil, several great nieces and nephews and cousins.
His loyal aide, Luanna Ballard, was a fixture in his life for his last years, and became a very trusted and dear friend. His family owes her a special debt of gratitude.
The family is holding a private memorial later this week. In lieu of flowers, they request that donations be made in Judge’s name to the Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth, or to an adoption charity of your choice.
Cremation was under the care and direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home.
