Paris High School students placed in the VFW Voice of Democracy competition. Zahra Tapia won first place and a check for $250 and Nolan Hamer won third and a check for $150. Zahra’s essay will be sent for District level competition.
Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is How Are You Showing Patriotism And Support for Our Country?
Both students are in Brent Wilburn’s Advanced Placement English IV class. Mr. Wilburn shared, “The Voice of Democracy competition, hosted by our local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter, provides an outstanding opportunity for students to articulate their perspectives on important national themes. Each year, it challenges them to elevate their writing, think critically, and reflect on the values that define us as Americans. I’m incredibly proud of our students for embracing that challenge and representing Paris High School so well.”
