Heaven gained a gentle soul, a faithful servant, and one of the kindest men to ever walk this earth when Lee Roy Nix went home to be with his Lord on October 24th, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born on August 27, 1938, to Mable and Carlyle Nix, Lee Roy, aka Peepaw, lived a life that touched countless hearts and changed the trajectory of so many young lives. He had a way of making everyone feel seen, valued, and loved, which is a rare gift that he shared freely with all who knew him. Sharon nix, aka gg, married Lee Roy on December 19th 1959. They have been married for 65 wonderful years.
Lee Roy served his country with honor in the United States Air Force and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, embodying the same dedication and integrity that would define every chapter of his life. But it was on the football field, the basketball court, and the track where so many came to know his passion, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the potential of young people. As a high school coach, he didn’t just build a championship team, he built character and confidence. Under his leadership, his teams claimed numerous championships. The real victories were the young men and women who learned what it meant to work hard, never give up, and treat others with respect.
A devoted Christian, Lee Roy’s faith wasn’t just something he talked about on Sundays—it was woven into every day of his life. His voice lifted in song at all of his home churches, praising the God he loved with his whole heart. He was tender, sweet, and kind in ways that made people feel the presence of Jesus through him. He was an example to everyone because he was genuine, humble, and full of grace.
Lee Roy had a wonderful sense of humor and a warmth that drew people in. He loved to say that his initials—L and R—were written in his socks. It was just like him to find joy in the simple things and share a smile wherever he went.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mable and Carlyle Nix, and his beloved brother, Howard Leon Nix.
Lee Roy’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him most. He is survived by his devoted wife and love of his life, Sharon Nix, who walked beside him through every season and sister Ann Nieta Rhodes. His children— Shannon Barrentine and husband Joe, Kyle Nix and wife Kelly, and Jada Seltzer and husband Kevin—carry forward his kindness and strength. His numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren were blessed to know his love and wisdom.
Though our hearts are broken, we find peace knowing that Lee Roy is home now, healed and reunited with those who went before him, resting in the arms of our Savior. His life was a beautiful gift, and the love he gave each of us will never be forgotten. A celebration of Lee Roy’s life will be held at Bright-Holland Funeral Home on Friday October 31st, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Danny Moody officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be made in Knights of Honor Cemetery at Blossom.
Casket bearers will be: Brad Barrentine, Lucas Roddy, Ryan Nix, Justin Nix, Kole Barrentine, and Quinten Barrentine. Honorary bearers will be: Devin Nix, Chase Chapman, Peyton Barrentine, Rudd Roddy, Kotton Barrentine, and every one of the student athletes that Mr. Nix was privileged to coach at the following high schools: Mountainair, Jal, Estancia, Fort Sumner, and Grady.
