Grand Reopening of Wade Park

The City of Paris has tentatively scheduled the Grand Reopening of Wade Park for March 31st and don’t worry…the rocket is still there.

Known to many as “Rocket Park”, residents were surprised to see the rocket had been removed in new plans for the park and expressed their opinions on the City of Paris Facebook page.

“Don’t take the ROCKET,” said one resident.

“Just save the rocket, it’s been there too long to throw away,” said another.

However, City Manager John Godwin said there were never any plans to remove the local icon.

“The rocket is too much of an icon to locals and we never want to get rid of it,” said Godwin. “We are repairing and fixing it to make sure it’s safe. It’s pretty old and can get hot in the summer so we’re just making it safer.”

Removal of most of the original playground started on January 22nd and additions to the park will include new equipment, a practice soccer field and more picnic tables, as well as repair of drainage, fencing, electrical under the pavilion and more.

Wade Park was actually originally called ‘Warlick Park’.

A streetcar company operating in Paris purchased the land from P.M. Warlick and fitted it as a public recreation and amusement center.

The Grand Reopening of Wade Park is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 31st at 1:30 p.m., with children arriving at 2 p.m. for an Easter Egg Hunt.
