Reno family suffers from carbon monoxide poisoning

A Reno family is recovering this afternoon after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home.

Reno Fire Chief, Chad Graves said the parents woke this morning not feeling well, had headaches and were nauseous.

“They found their kids weren’t doing well either and having trouble staying awake, so they took them to the hospital where it was discovered they were breathing in carbon monoxide,” said Graves.

The family was released from the hospital a short time later and immediately called 911.

“We got high readings of carbon monoxide inside the home but were about to get the gas shut off and the house ventilated,” said Graves.

Graves said the family is feeling better and will all be fine, but stresses the importance of making sure residents smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work properly.

“If you have any type of natural gas or propane then you need a carbon monoxide detector; you could be breathing it in and not even know it,” added Graves.

He suggested checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice a year and if you don’t have one you can buy them from any big box stores.

“We have tools that can detect the levels in your home so if you think you have issues call us,” said Graves.

Signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include a dull headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision or loss of consciousness.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, go outside and call 911 immediately. Do not return to the building until emergency services personnel gives you the all-clear.
