Lamar Veterinary Clinic confirmed via a Facebook post over the weekend a confirmed case of rabies in a feline patient.

“We are extremely saddened to report that we have had a confirmed case of rabies in a feline patient. This patient was a kitten that was attacked by a rabid skunk while playing in the owner’s front yard. The owners had done everything right to care for their kitten before the incident but unfortunately, the kitten was too young to receive a vaccination against rabies. There is no treatment for rabies in animals. If a human is exposed, they must receive a series of multiple, painful injections.”

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Once clinical signs occur, an infected animal usually dies within five days.

Lamar Veterinary Clinic requires ALL patients over the age of 16 weeks to have a current rabies vaccination. We do not do this to sell you something your pet doesn’t need or to make money. We do this to protect you, your family, your pets, and our staff! If anyone is bitten by an un-vaccinated pet, it is required by law that your pet be quarantined for a minimum of 10 days. We do not want this for your pet! Please vaccinate!
