It’s a heartwarming Thanksgiving story seen by millions and now the story of the “mistaken” text message is set to become a Netflix movie.
The feature film The Thanksgiving Text will follow the true story of strangers becoming friends after the text mishap.
In 2016, Wanda Dench mistakenly sent a Thanksgiving dinner invite to a number she thought was her grandsons. However, as it turns out, Dench has sent a text to Jamal Hinton, a stranger who was 17-years old at the time.
After realizing that she has texted the wrong number, Dench still extended an invitation for Hinton to join them for Thanksgiving dinner.
“I was, like, ‘wow, she is really nice, I should really go’,” said Hinton to Fox4 at the time. “She seems really sweet. Just a nice lady, I guess.”
Dench said she did not think for a second that Hinton would come to dinner but he did and six years later, Dench and Hinton are still spending the holiday together.
“It has been an amazing journey,” said Dench.
“She is an amazing person. She is the best,” said Hinton. “Me and Wanda will forever be friends.”
Now, their story is set to become a Netflix movie after Hinton made the announcement on Twitter on Dec. 2.
“I am very excited to announce our new partnership with Netflix. We thank every single one of you for your love and support in our journey the last 6 years. We can’t wait to tell our story on the big screen!,” said Hinton on Twitter.
“We are excited to share our story with the world,” Hinton and Dench said in a joint statement. “We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make.”
According to a report by Variety, Abdul Williams, whose works include Lottery Ticket, Salt-N-Pepa, and The Bobby Brown Story, is set to write a screenplay for the movie. Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. will produce the film; their works include The Hate U Give, The Barbershop franchise, and Men of Honor.
The streaming platform is yet to release the date on when the movie might come out.
