Small Town Helping Hands, a local non-profit organization, will host its 6th Annual Crawfish Boil & Live Auction on May 6 raising money for local families to help financial burden during illness in the family.
Lindsay Thompson Fisher with Small Town Helping Hands said the local non-profit was started in 2018 after her mom spent 75 days in hospital with a life-threatening illness.
“Collectively as a family we were fortunate enough to be able to take turns so that someone was with her daily. Being that she was in Dallas that required a lot of driving and hotel stays. Our Friends, family and neighbors came together and had a benefit crawfish boil and cake auction,” said Fisher.
During that time, friends and family hosted a crawfish boil and cake auction to raise money to help pay the numerous hospital bills that were stacking up — even with health insurance.
“My mom was unofficially the first recipient of a Small Town Helping Hands donation and we will forever be grateful for that. Shortly after that benefit, Small Town Helping Hands received its name and was officially made a non profit organization.”
Since 2018, the organization has donated roughly $225,000 and helped 65 families in Lamar, Red River and Fannin county.
Last year, around $50,000 was donated to help 18 families, which Fisher says, “could not be made possible without sponsors and the generous donations given.”
In 2023, the 6th Annual Crawfish Boil and Live Auction will be held on May 6 at the Thompson Family Cabin, 21151 FM 79 in Sumner, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Fried fish will be served with the crawfish and the auction will follow.
“There will also be a cash drawing with $2,000 going to first place, $1,000 to second place and $500 to third place,” said Fisher.
Tickets for the cash drawing will be $5 each or 5 for $20 and will be sold prior and during the event.
“We want the public to know what a great organization this is for our surrounding communities and to come out and support if they can. We do ask for a donation to enter.”
Thompson Family Cabin is located approximately 18 miles from the loop in Direct, Texas.
