Officers with the Savoy Police Department on Wednesday found Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Marijuana during a traffic stop as well as approximately one gram of Fentanyl, a highly dangerous and lethal narcotic.
According to reports, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Commerce and Edwards Streets for a minor traffic violation.
“During the stop, the driver admitted to having Marijuana in her vehicle,” said the department in a press release. “A probable cause search of her car led to the discovery of Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Marijuana, and most importantly, Fentanyl.”
The department said this is believed to be the first case the City of Savoy has encountered involving Fentanyl.
“It (Fentanyl) is a controlled substance about 100 times more potent than Morphine. It is a highly dangerous narcotic that is lethal in very small doses.”
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, one gram is enough Fentanyl to potentially kill 500 people or more than half of the City of Savoy population, said the department.
“The substances were all tested utilizing standard field test kits used by law enforcement nationwide. All narcotics will be sent to the DPS State Crime Lab for further analysis and confirmation. The Savoy Police Department will continue to investigate and arrest narcotics offenders in town.”
