Reno Chief of Police Jeremy Massey has been selected to receive the 2023 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Public Service.
“It’s an honor to be nominated and receive this award,” said Massey. “I am thankful to serve such a great city and state.”
The awards are presented to selected peace officers, reserve officers, jailers, custodial officers, and telecommunicators who are licensed by TCOLE. These nominees exceed the normal expectations of job performance through acts of professional achievement, public service, or valor
City council member Amanda Willows nominated Massey for the award for always going “above and beyond each and every day.”
“Chief Massey not only to protects and cares for our citizens but he makes sure his officers and coworkers are taken care of, as well. He created Reno PD’s Special Heroes Unit, a team of incredible children who have been fighting bravely against cancer and other serious illnesses, to show his support and let them and their families know they aren’t in the fight alone. He has a heart of gold and is such a treasure for our community,” said Willows.
In her submission to nominate Massey, Willows shared how he recently named 6-year-old Alex Stephens, a local child battling very aggressive brain cancer, as the newest Sergeant of the Reno PD Special Heroes Unit.
“He even drove to Dallas where the child is hospitalized and took him a uniform shirt, a real badge, and other gifts to lift his spirits. The many acts of kindness that Chief Massey does are done out of the goodness of his heart. He never does anything for recognition. He is loved by everyone in our community, and everyone that works for him. He works so hard to keep us safe.”
Massey will be recognized at an awards ceremony in the House of Representatives Chamber at the State Capitol in Austin on June 16, 2023.
