Local gymgoer, Joshua Miller, who transformed his life from a drug addict to health and fitness enthusiast, has made it to the quarter-finals for Mr. Health & Fitness.
The Ms. Health and Fitness and Mr. Health and Fitness competitions features athletes worldwide that have been hand-selected to compete for an incredible prize package while raising money for injured veterans nationwide with Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors.
Miller, whose grandfather served in the Navy, said his fitness journey “changed his life for the better” and he was so embarrassed to enter the competition, that he didn’t even tell his family.
“I was addicted to hard drugs for a long time and when I finally got off them, my metabolism was shot and I gained weight very easily,” said Miller. “I was not happy with the way I looked and my friends were making jokes to my face and behind me back. But the more I got into shape, the less friends I started to have but its become my passion and has changed my life for the better.”
If he won, Miller, a husband and father to two girls, said he’d definitely use the money to pay off a few bills, help his oldest daughter, who is a missionary, with school and take his youngest daughter to Disney World.
“I know that in some ways I’ve replaced that addiction for drugs with the gym but my family means the world to be and I want to use this opportunity to not only spoil them and show them how much they mean to me but show others that might be where I was a long time ago, that you can come out of it and turn your life around but also.”
Mr. Health & Fitness, which returns for a second year, has a prize package that includes a 2-page Muscle & Fitness magazine feature and $20,000.
After being selected by the organization, the winners are decided by an online voting system where the male and female athletes with the most votes in the final round will take their respective titles.
