With a “historic” number of packages being shipped this Christmas due to the coronavirus pandemic, delivery drivers are busier than they have ever been.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) says it is overwhelmed due to the extremely large number of packages being sent and a limited number of employees because of COVID-19. The service issued a statement warning customers of potential delays during the holiday.
Not surprisingly, delivery drivers are also working around the clock to deliver packages on time.
Knowing just how much work those workers are putting in, several Lamar County residents have made it their mission to show them just how appreciated they are.
“I wanted to show our UPS driver that we appreciate him so I put together a snack box with a note so he knows just how appreciated he is during this busy time,” said Maygen Steed.
The note reads, “Merry Christmas! Thank you for all you do! Help yourself and God bless.”
Steed posted a photo of the snack box with the note to Facebook and it wasn’t long before other locals jumped on board.
“Love. Doing this too,” said Stephanie Moore.
Heather Payne Kelley said, “We have an awesome UPS man too.”
John Darst, who is the man behind Darst Light Show, has left gifts for his delivery drivers for years.
“We just realize that the delivery drivers work long hours this season in a largely thankless job,” said Darst. “So, in a similar idea as our lights, we just want to share some joy and hope we can help make their day a little brighter. We’ve gotten a few thank yous and we have spurred some friends to do similar things so it helps foster that pay it forward mentality.
Steed said that while the gesture may be small she hopes it brightens his day.
“I encourage everyone who is ordering packages online to leave something out for their delivery driver. It’s the least we can do.”
