The Paris-Lamar County Health District and The Salvation Army-Paris teamed up to form a Community Garden.
“Our goals in working together on this project is to feed the hungry in our community as well as adding to the beautification of downtown Paris.”
The garden will be providing fruits, vegetables, and supplying ingredients for the Salvation Army’s daily meal line and food for those in need.
It will also feature a street front rose display and walkway to the garden with decorative stepping stones painted by students at our local High Schools.
The garden features a variety of fruits and vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, squash, zucchini, jalapeño, cubanelle peppers, bell peppers, cayenne peppers, watermelon and strawberries.
The pergola was dedicated in the memory of Sheila Wilcox, the late wife of Richard McIntire and mother of Megan Myers who dedicated years of time of service to the Salvation Army.
McIntire, along with his friends built the pergola as a tribute to her and also did all of the gravel work and laid stones which were painted by the art students at North Lamar, Prairiland, Paris High, and Chisum high schools.
Shawonna Rhoades, representing the Prairiland Beta Team, and students also helped build the planters.
The Community Garden is located on the northeast corner of Grand Ave and 3rd St, just off the downtown square and next door to the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
