Children’s Advocacy Center of Paris received $1,000 to restock boy’s shoes in its Rainbow Room and is now seeking community support to match the donation to help restock its girl’s shoes.
More than $17,000 worth of items were given out from the Rainbow Room to children in Lamar and Red River counties – an increase of 54% from 2019. All money and items donated to the Rainbow Room go to a child in need.
“In addition to seeing if someone would match the $1,000 for girl’s shoes, we are in need of socks and underwear for boys ages toddler up to adult,” CAC Executive Director Rebecca Peevy said. “People can donate specifically to the Rainbow Room by adding a note with the donation or items can be purchased and brought by the CAC. We do ask that everything be new with tags still on.”
The organization’s Rainbow Room is an emergency resource room stocked with new items for children who enter the foster care system.
“Typically, when children are removed from their homes, they enter foster care with little to no clothing,” Peevy said. “Prior to the Rainbow Room, it would fall to the CPS Investigators to stop by the store to purchase clothing and hygiene items like a toothbrush and toothpaste to get the child through the first few days in foster care until the foster family can secure additional clothing and items.”
The Rainbow Room helps the Children’s Advocacy Center of Paris give each child who is going into foster care a few changes of new clothes, shoes and hygiene products. The Rainbow Room also provides pack-and-plays for families CPS works with who may not have a safe space for their infant to sleep – reducing the risk of SIDS.
“It’s been said that a person never stands so tall as when they kneel to help a child and those who give to help a child in need are giants among men,” Peevy said.
The Rainbow Room was started as a Leadership Lamar project and has given out more than $100,000 worth of items in the last 10 years. The $1,000 donor wishes to remain anonymous.
