Paris Mayor Steve Clifford on Sunday advised locals to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available while also reminding residents to maintain social distancing this holiday season.
“We may well be nearing the end of the coronavirus pandemic. Two vaccines are now being widely distributed across the country. A third vaccine may well be approved soon,” said Clifford. “I advise everyone to get the vaccine as soon as it is offered.”
Clifford said the vaccines have been tested and have been shown to be extremely safe.
“They are 95% effective in preventing infection from the coronavirus. If everyone takes the vaccine, we will soon achieve herd immunity, which should put an end to the pandemic. We will then be able to resume our normal lives.”
Until the vaccines become available, Clifford said locals still need to continue precautions.
“First and foremost, we should protect the most vulnerable in our community. If you wish to visit an elderly person or someone with significant medical conditions, please wear a mask and remain socially distanced from that person. N95 masks are the best, and they are becoming widely available. If you are at high risk from the virus, always protect yourself by wearing an N95 mask whenever you are in public places, especially when indoors.”
“Christmas gatherings pose a particularly significant risk for the spread of the virus. Try to limit your gatherings to your immediate family. If you plan on visiting with extended family, please practice social distancing. Have large gatherings outside if at all possible. If this is not possible, please spread your gatherings into several interior rooms and try to maintain social distancing of 6 feet or more while inside and in the presence of others. Those who are at the greatest risk from the virus should consider wearing a mask, preferably an N95 mask when gathering with extended family. We are in the home stretch of this pandemic. Let’s all work together to keep everyone safe.”
