A man who fired a handgun multiple times at Bogata Police Officers during a pursuit on Saturday has been arraigned on multiple charges and received a $1.85 million bond.
At approximately 10:20 p.m., Officer Roddy Hutchings with the Bogata Police Department responded to a call of a suspicious person, later identified as Daimon Kain Nelson, in the Dollar General parking lot after closing hours and staff were concerned to exit the store.
Upon arrival, the officer observed a white passenger car occupied by a white male driver, who fled the parking lot in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed upon the officer approaching the vehicle.
The officer pursued the suspect, attempting to stop him, but he evaded police and left the area on Hwy 271 North.
During the pursuit, the suspect was driving erratically at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Red River County Deputies Sgt. San Jule, Deputy Newby, and Chief Bruton also joined the pursuit as it left the city limits northbound on Hwy 271.
“In the area of Deport on Highway 271, the suspect slowed down and began firing a handgun multiple times out the driver’s window at the lead pursuit vehicle (Off. Hutchings), but fortunately missed pursuing Officers,” said Bogata PD online.
The pursuit continued north of Deport where the suspect turned onto a county road and wrecked his vehicle into a ditch.
Bogata Officers and Red River County Deputies conducted a high risk stop and took the suspect into custody without further incident and transported him to Red River County Jail.
During the ensuing investigation, it was discovered the vehicle was stolen out of Louisiana along with a firearm. The vehicle was inventoried and seized as evidence.
Nelson, the driver, was booked in for the following charges:
1. Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant-Deadly Weapon
