Florida Senator Marco Rubio on March 1 reintroduced the Sunshine Protection Act, which was unanimously approved in March 2022. However, it died in the House in 2022.
This bill would end changing the clocks an hour back every November, making daylight saving time permanent.
“This ritual of changing time twice a year is stupid,” Rubio said. “Locking the clock has overwhelming bipartisan and popular support.”
A co-sponsor of the bill, Senator Ed Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, said the law forcing Americans to change their clocks twice a year is “literally older than sliced bread.
“We have the momentum right now in Congress to build on the progress I’ve made over the years to add two months of sunny evenings to everyone’s calendar, but we need Republicans and Democrats to come together to deliver more sun, more smiles, and brighter skies for everyone.”
Changing clocks has become an American ritual in 1918, when Congress passed Standard Time Act to establish federal oversight of time zones.
