The Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship foundation announced Julio Peralta, of Blossom, as its 2021 scholarship recipient. The foundation is set to present Peralta with the scholarship right before the Slade Baker Memorial Run during its run and crawfish boil at 1264 S. Main St., formerly The Depot Bar and Grill, on Saturday, May 8.
“We felt Julio exemplified all of the attributes we look for when awarding the Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship to Lamar County residents pursuing careers in the fire service,” Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship foundation said. “Mr. Peralta is enrolled to attend fire academy in the Fall of 2021 and will be a great asset to our community upon completion.”
In his 500-word essay based on public service, Peralta talked about what the industry means to him.
“To me,” Peralta wrote, “public service means … an individual willing to put in the work to serve a community not just to help those in need, but also to better the environment and society as a whole.”
The Slade Baker Memorial 5K run starts at 11 a.m. with the 1-mile walk at 11:30.
