Despite living with an illness that would stop most from continuing to volunteer for their local fire department, Kendall Hatanville says it “keeps him going” and was recently recognized for his dedication at the First Responder Appreciation Dinner.
On Thursday night, the City of Paris EMS recognized Hatanville’s passion for helping other and dedication to the Roxton Volunteer Fire Department with the Distinguished Service Award.
“I’m thankful for being honored with this plaque and enjoy working alongside the men and women with Paris EMS. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard it from a number of them (Paris EMS) on calls, ‘Kendall, what are you doing here,’ and I know probably shouldn’t be out running calls but helping others is what keeps me going,” said Hatanville.
Being around a fire department since he was “old enough to walk,” Hatanville joined the Roxton VFD when he was 18-years old, serving his community for the past 15-years.
Hatanville is currently on dialysis for kidney disease and also deals with lung issues.
“The illness has slowed me down some but won’t stop me completely,” he said. “Last year, I was told I would never eat again unless it was through a feeding tube but I have since started eating normal food again. I also have a drain in my side draining fluid out but they don’t know where the fluid is coming from.”
Despite illness, Hatanville continues to respond when called, driving the trucks, hauling water or running the pump panel for his fellow volunteer firefighters while the fight fires.
“Helping others is what keeps me on my feet. I have always wanted to help others in a time of need. God, my family and the fire department is what keeps me going.”
