A group of Reno residents recently launched a petition campaign, “Buy Local First – Reno,” to call for a local option election in May for the sale of malt beverages and wine with the city of Reno.
“As a business community and as citizens of Reno, we recognize that we are losing a lot of sales tax dollars. Right now, people are going outside of Reno to visit stores that can sell beer and wine, one-mile in either direction, and then because of convenience, they will shop, buy fuel and spend their money outside of our city.” said campaign organizers.
Cities receive funding through sales tax revenue and also property tax revenue, among other things, explained the group online.
“The more that we can bring in sales tax dollars the less we have to rely on property tax.”
The group needs 440 petition signatures of registered voters in Reno by December 14 to require the Reno City Council to call an election in May.
Those wishing to sign the petition can visit the groups Facebook page, click here, or call Amanda Willows at 903-905-1229 or Joey McCarthy at 903-715-8520.
