After nearly a decade since its close, Lake Fannin officially reopened its docks to the public Sunday.
Lake Fannin was first built in the early 1900s and was closed in 2013 because it lacked the needed funds to keep the lake open to the public.
In 2019, former President Donald Trump signed a piece of legislation that had a direct impact on Lake Fannin, restoring local control of the land.
In February 2019, Senator John Cornyn and Congressman John Ratcliffe released a statement after their Lake Fannin Recreation Area Conveyance Act passed the Senate.
“The residents of Fannin County know best how to care for their land, and with this bill, we can restore local control of 2,025 acres in their own backyard,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I’m grateful to Sen. Cruz and my colleagues in the Senate for supporting this bill, and I ask my colleagues in the House to do the same.”
Rep. Ratcliffe said, “After all the hard work we’ve done in Congress in coordination with local officials to get 2,025 acres Lake Fannin land back under local control, we’re one step closer to the finish line. I’d like to thank Sens. Cornyn and Cruz for leading this bill through the Senate, and I urge my colleagues in the House for their support of this effort to reduce the Federal estate.”
