It was a busy June at Paris Regional Medical Center. The hospital’s Labor and Delivery unit delivered 90 babies, and July is shaping up to be even busier.
“We had 90 babies born in June, including one set of twins, which totals 89 births,” said Director of Women’s and Children’s Services Mandie Watson. “To put it into perspective, the average number of deliveries we see in a normal month is 65-70.”
With 43 boys and 47 girls born, the most deliveries the unit saw in 24 hours was six, but they had four other days during the month that had five deliveries each day.
“I continue to be impressed with and so proud of my team and the quality of care they provide to all their patients. More babies mean more work for everyone, naturally, but we are so thankful these mamas choose us for their care, and we look forward to the opportunity to make their experiences special.”
Watson said she couldn’t say for sure what caused the baby boom last month; however, some speculate it may be related to many being quarantined in 2020.
“Based on due dates and average gestational age, these babies were conceived somewhere around mid-September of 2020.”
With what they thought was a busy month behind them, July started even busier with eight deliveries on July 1 and the volume of deliveries continuing to be up during the first week of the month.
The current count on July 8 is 23 deliveries.
Congratulations to all those families who had babies throughout June and July.
