The Paris Masonic Lodge has shown its continued support for the future of healthcare by awarding five $500 scholarships to students in the vocational nursing program at Paris Junior College.
The recipients are Erika Caplinger of Brashear, Stephanie Harris of Paris, Bunbotumsocheat “Victoria” Kong of Cooper, Katy Luera of Quinlan, and Javery Sims of Paris.
The students expressed deep gratitude for the assistance, noting that the financial support eases significant burdens.
“I’m looking for anything that will help me,” said Caplinger. “It’s just me and my husband living on one income. I drive an hour to class, and it’s a lot of stress. Any help gives us a little freedom, a sense of independence, and not having to rely on others too much.”
Harris shared a similar sentiment.
“This will help me with my family,” she said. “We have two children, and I had to quit my fulltime job to attend nursing school. This scholarship helps us a lot, and we really appreciate it.”
Brad Bolton, Assistant Director of Nursing at PJC, emphasized how crucial this kind of support can be.
“Our student population is very diverse—many have families and must work,” said Bolton. “Any assistance goes a long way. Sometimes it’s the difference that allows a student to continue their education. We sincerely appreciate the Paris Masonic Lodge for their support; it helps our students succeed.”
During the check presentation, three Masonic Lodge members were present: Bill Chipman, past Master and current Chaplain of the Paris Masonic Lodge and Chair of its Scholarship Committee; Timmy E. Lester, District Deputy Grand Master; and John Berquist, a past Master and past District Deputy Grand Master of District 2.
“This is great,” said Chipman. “I’ve always supported the nursing school and education. We need nurses, and in my condition, I really need them!”
Berquist offered a word of encouragement to prospective students.
“Apply for any and every scholarship you find,” he said. “Do the research and apply—you never know what opportunities might come through.”
