The Reno Parks and Trail Committee is apologizing to the public after discovering a vendor at their Summer Celebration on June 24 were given condoms and lubricant to kids.
Several parents took to social media expressing their disgust and outrage after discovering their children were given the items.
“Anyone else’s kids given condoms at the fireworks show in Reno? I am not ok with that,” said one concerned parent on Facebook.
Another parent shared a photo of the bag on social media stating, “I am absolutely appalled that these were given out at the Reno, Texas fireworks show with condoms and lubricant to young children and teens. #disgusted #shameonyou.”
Several other parents commented that their children also were given the same bags and that its their job as a parent to teach their children about such topics, not a stranger.
“This is a parents job…not a stranger. I feel indifferent and not at a ‘family’ function. To me these are boundaries that should not be crossed.”
“It is NOT OKAY. You have to be kidding me. Yeah, teach your teens about safety. On your own terms. It’s your own family business to handle. And there were small kids there. Not the time or place. I am glad we didn’t attend. I guess we have to stop attending anything until people get their crap straight again,” said another parent online.
The Reno Parks and Trail Committee said they were unaware during the event that children were being given the items.
“It has come to our attention today (June 29) that a vendor distributed some unauthorized items at the Reno Summer Celebration,” said Amanda Willows, chairperson of the Reno Parks and Trails Committee. “We sincerely apologize that this occurred and are taking steps to ensure something like this never happens again.”
Many showed support for the Reno Parks and Trail Committee stating they know something like this would have never be approved.
No further information on who the vendor was is available at this time.
The Reno Parks and Trail Committee said they are looking into the complaints and are ensuring this won’t happened again.
