While many people across that nation remembered those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom yesterday, nearly 50 local athletes showed their gratitude in a different way.

“We do ‘The Murph’ every year in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005,” said owner of Revival Fitness Kolton Porter. “This was one of Murphy’s favorite workouts and he called it ‘Body Armour.’”

The workout starts with a one-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another one-mile run.

Without a doubt, ‘Murph’ tests your endurance and strength, both physically and mentally.

“We do this in honor of a great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country. We do this for Michael and for all those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

While Porter had a great response from those wanting to challenge themselves and do the ‘Murph’, he never imagined almost 50 athletes turning up.

“Honestly, it was really humbling to see so many people show up,” said Porter. “What I’ve always hoped for is to have a gym of my own, to have a community of folks who enjoy working out, encouraging one another, coming as they are, and building one another up.”

Nationally, the Murph event has raised nearly $1 million for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation which awards about 16 scholarships a year.

“This experience was the Lord, once again, showing me to trust in him and he’ll take care of it,” added Porter. “I’m so thankful to all who showed up, to our members and friends who support us and believe in us. It was a wonderful Memorial Day.”
