On April 12, 2023, the students of Everett Elementary’s 2nd grade class hosted a one-of-a-kind Goods and Services fair, showcasing their creativity and entrepreneurship skills.
The event was a culmination of weeks of hard work and learning about economics, as each student was tasked with creating 10 unique items made out of 90% paper to “sell” at the fair.
Under the guidance of their dedicated teachers, the young entrepreneurs used their imagination and resourcefulness to craft an array of impressive products, including paper jewelry, paper toys, paper decorations, and more.
They also priced their items, considering factors such as production costs, market demand, and competition, to set fair prices for their products.
One of the highlights of the fair was the sales pitches that the students wrote and memorized to entice customers to purchase their products. With confidence and enthusiasm, the young salespeople showcased their communication and persuasion skills as they shared the unique features and benefits of their paper-based products.
The fair was a bustling hub of activity as students eagerly interacted with customers, practiced their negotiation skills, and learned firsthand about supply and demand. The event provided a fun and educational experience that allowed the students to apply classroom concepts to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of economics and business principles.
“I am amazed at the creativity that our students showed as well as the support that the parents gave to their children to help them be successful. Our Goods and Service fair has become one of my favorite events.” said Laci Carr, second grade social studies teacher. Brianna Stewart, another second grade social studies teacher at Everett said “I am extremely proud and impressed at what these second graders have put together this year. Their excitement can be felt throughout the school. This fair makes me look forward to what these bright little minds will accomplish in the future.”
The Goods and Services fair not only showcased the talents and skills of the 2nd grade students but also fostered important life skills such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, and teamwork. The event was a resounding success, and the students left with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements.
As the young entrepreneurs packed up their booths at the end of the fair, they were already buzzing with ideas for future businesses and products. With the valuable lessons learned from this hands-on experience, these 2nd graders are well on their way to becoming savvy business leaders of tomorrow.
