Horizon House’s Thrift Store has a goal of reopening come March, as it undergoes upgrades to its interior and anticipation of overhauling the store’s overall market system.
“It’s important to us that individuals shopping in our store have a clean, safe storefront to shop in, regardless of their income level,” Lamar County Human Resource Council Executive Director Shelly Braziel announced on social media Sunday said, “and that’s why this remodel was so important to (Lamar County Human Resource Council).”
In the announcement, Braziel said the thrift store was closed to the public in December to begin the “massive remodel.”
“With the help of Blue Belt Contracting, the entire store has received a face-lift,” she said. “It’s like night and day, and already, we are so proud of it. New walls, fresh paint, new floors, light fixtures, are just a few of the upgrades.”
Braziel said the thrift store’s model is new, which will include vouchers to low-income households, Horizon House residents or those in emergency situations — like a fire. The thrift store will also give discounts to those who receive SNAP benefits.
“The Thrift Store is a big part of what we do at (Horizon House), and it serves two purposes,” Braziel said. “One, it allows our clients and other individuals in need of help a cheap or, sometimes even, free method of getting clothes and other items of need for themselves and/or family. And two, the funds raised from sales help support programming at the shelter.”
Braziel said the Horizon House is not accepting donations because, “we simply don’t have space while we remodel.”
The organization will make it known on its social media pages — here — when they again start accepting donations.
Braziel said donation items the organization continuously looks for include:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Baby items
- Housewares
- Blankets
- Toiletries (NEW)
“This is not an all-encompassing list, but simply items of high need,” Braziel said.
For anyone looking to volunteer at the store or to make a donation toward the shelter or the remodel, email horizonclerk@gmail.com.
“We anticipate the remodel to be complete by mid-February, and then we’ll begin the task of overhauling our market system, with a goal of reopening in March,” Braziel said.
