After two dogs succumbed to what’s believed to be gopher poison, Lamar County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a possible animal cruelty case in Deport.
Jalyn Raley posted on social media on March 19 about her Deport parents’ family pets having been poisoned a week prior.
“My mom called me at work and told me they had been killed so I rushed home. We found a bowl with several pieces of a Gopher poison that’s the main ingredient is Strychnine,” she said on social media. “Strychnine kills very quickly, and is very toxic.”
After performing a necropsy and toxicology on the deceased pets, she said the findings prove both dogs ingested strychnine poison, which “caused a very sudden and violent death.
“This week has been very hard for me pulling up every day expecting them to come running out to meet me,” Raley continued. “It absolutely blows my mind that someone had the audacity to not only come up in my parents’ yard and poison them, but they also put the bowl within 10-20 feet of my daughter’s play equipment. I’m just very thankful my daughters did not find it before the dogs.”
According to Lamar County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tommy Moore, the sheriff’s office has no leads on a suspect at this time. He also included there have been no other reported cases of dogs being poisoned in the Deport area.
He said if a suspect is arrested, they will face a third-degree cruelty to non-livestock animals charge – a felony.
As the family has a reward offered for information, the sheriff’s office asks for anyone with information to call 903-737-2400.
