Christmas has come and gone, the presents have been opened and festive food has been eaten, and now it is back to reality for many of us.
So, when do you take down the Christmas tree and decorations?
Some can’t wait to get their house back to normal and take the decorations down on Christmas or Boxing, but the tradition, since the Victorian era, is to remove decorations on Twelfth Night.
The tradition is to take down their decorations on the Twelfth Night, which is, the twelfth day after Christmas which is Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022.
The Twelfth Night signals the end of the festive season and some believe it is bad luck to keep decorations up after this date.
Catholics traditionally wait until Jan. 7 to take down their Christmas tree and decorations as this is the day after the Epiphany. The Epiphany is a feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ.
Some also believe it is bad luck to take your tree down early or late.
The legend states tree spirits reside in Christmas greenery, and after the festive period is over they must be released back into nature.
Failing to do this means greenery will not grow back in the spring, according to the legend.
Of course, ultimately you should take down your Christmas tree and decorations whenever it is most convenient for you and your family.
