The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Paris is gearing up to release 5,000 rubber turtles for its annual Turtle Float fundraiser on July 25 at the Love Civic Center.
“The event raises money for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, which we use to offset our programs’ cost,” said Executive Director Jason Macchia. “We charge a small membership fee of $50 a year to our members. The rest of the money we raise through events like the turtle float or through grants.”
Adoptions for turtles are $10 per turtle, or you can get a herd of 11 for $100.
The big float will happen on Saturday, July 25, kicking off at 10 a.m. Thousands of turtles will float down the track while avoiding the islands that are placed along the path. The first three turtles to cross the finish line will win cash prizes for their adopters.
“There are also some random turtles selected as quick-pick winners and a prize for the turtle that finishes last. The race lasts about two minutes, so it is quick but fun to watch,” said Macchia.
He said the essential part of the float is that the funds support the club’s vital programs, such as the After School Program.
“The dollars raised allow us to keep our membership dues down and live up to our mission of helping youth, especially those who need us most,” he added.
People looking to adopt a turtle or a herd or two can call the club at 903.784.6360 or contact one of the club’s board members to help with the process.
