Quick thinking may have prevented a much larger fire at Pat Mayse Lake on Sunday after a boat reportedly exploded at the boat ramp, prompting its owner to move the burning vessel away from the bank, nearby grass and campers.
Responding to a post on social media, Lorrie Curry said she and her husband owned the boat and don’t know what started the blaze.
“We don’t know what happened,” said Curry. “It just exploded on the boat ramp, and the best thing to do was get it away from the bank so it didn’t create a huge grass fire where campers were.”
Curry said her husband suffered burns to his hands and beard, but no one else was injured.
“We’ve had the boat for over seven years and no problems. It’s paid for, so it wasn’t an insurance scam. Just a freak accident that happened.”
While the incident left the couple shaken, Curry said they are thankful no one was seriously injured and expressed their appreciation to everyone who showed concern, stopped to help and the first responders who assisted at the scene.
