John Wayne Story, 75, of Paris, Texas, passed away on April 26, 2026.
John was born on February 23, 1951, in DeQueen, Arkansas, to Cecil Story and Eunice Story (Duggan). He built a life rooted in hard work, family, and the simple things that brought him joy.
He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Lisa Story, whom he married in 1980, and by his children: Randy Story and Brenda of Paris, Texas; Brandon Story and Doc of Keller, Texas; Brian Story and Fran of Killeen, Texas; and Justin Story and Alexis of Paris, Texas.
He was a proud grandfather to Haven Hostetler, Taylor Dake, Skyler Kelly, Tyler Kelly, Austin Kelly, Diego Reyes-Diaz, Joseph Story, Bentley Story, Breeanna Story, and Gabriella Story, and was preceded in death by his granddaughter, LaRanda Story. His legacy continues through six great-grandchildren.
John is further survived by his siblings: Doris Pendleton, Harold Story, Lonnie Story, Loretta Oliver, and Roy Story, and was preceded in death by his brother Harvey Story.
He served in the National Guard, carrying that same sense of duty and work ethic throughout his life.
A simple man at heart, John found happiness in the things he loved most—hunting, rodeos, gardening, and working with his hands. He enjoyed spending time at auctions and swap meets, and could often be found at the coffee shop telling stories.
But more than anything, he was happiest in the quiet moments—sitting on the back porch, a cigarette in one hand and a glass of sweet tea in the other, looking out over his garden or thinking about the next thing he could fix. It didn’t take much to make him happy.
He was known for being a little stubborn, always having a joke ready—sometimes a little inappropriate, but always funny—and for the deep love he had for his grandchildren.
John lived life his own way, on his own terms, and those who knew him will remember his grit, his humor, and the simple, steady presence he brought to their lives. He will be deeply missed.
A Gathering of Family & Friends is scheduled from 2 – 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2nd at Bright-Holland Funeral Home.
