Martha Sue Haggard Lewis passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2026 after more than a 16-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was at peace and went gently into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on October 5, 1936 to Clifton Lee Haggard and Alouise Ford Haggard.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Burr and Alouise; James Haggard (brother), Matthew Haggard (nephew) and Scott Lewis (husband).
Martha was born and raised in Linden, Texas where she was involved in many activities while attending Linden High School. She attended East Texas State earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, followed by a Masters of Education with a major in Music, a Minor in Education and a Minor in Speech. It was while she was at ETSU that she met the love of her life, Scott Lewis. They married on August 7, 1959, in Linden.
Martha began her very successful teaching career in Mt. Vernon, Texas as the districts’ Elementary Music Teacher and Secondary Choir Director. In 1966 the family moved to Midland and Martha continued teaching Elementary Music, Art and Reading until her retirement in 1993.
Martha was an active member of First Baptist Church in Midland. She was a long-time member and soloist for the Choir as well as heading up the Children’s Choir and Children’s Training Union program for many years.
She was also very involved with Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional teachers sorority, and served in many capacities including State Choir Director and International Music Chairman.
During her retirement years, Martha enjoyed camping with Scott and their friends and could usually be found sitting in a comfy chair reading a favorite author. She loved visiting the grandkids and attending as many of their events as possible. She and Scott made the move to Victoria in 2018 where she lived out her remaining years.
Martha loved sharing her passion for music with everyone, but especially children. Ever the lady, she was always sweet, kind and ready to share her beautiful smile. Her’s was a life well lived; filled with faith, love, laughter and music.
Martha is survived by her children: Stacy Hudson (Don) of Victoria; Steve Lewis (Julie) of Lubbock; Grandchildren: Michael Hudson (Haley) of McKinney; David Hudson (Kayla) of Frisco; Turner Lewis of Lubbock; Catherine Hudson of Austin; Coleman Lewis of Lubbock; Great grandsons: Levi Hudson and Everett Hudson.
A family Burial Service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2nd in Paris, Texas under the direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church in Linden, Texas at 1:00 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 on Saturday, May 2nd.
