Paris ISD students are required to wear a mask once they return to school on Thursday after the Board of Trustees met Tuesday night in an emergency meeting. The board of trustees amended the district’s dress code, adding the requirement of masks as part of its dress code.
According to Superintendent Paul Jones, visitors are not required to wear a mask as the school, “can’t require visitors or parents to follow dress code.”
According to a release from the school, the board of trustees said it is concerned about student and faculty health and safety.
“The Board believes the dress code can be used to mitigate communicable health issues, and therefore has amended the PISD dress code to protect our students and employees,” according to the press release.
The board said Texas Governor Greg Abbott is unable to overtake the board of trustees’ “power and duty to govern and oversee the management of the public schools of the district.
“Nothing in the Governor’s Executive Order 38 states he has suspended Chapter 11 of the Texas Education Code, and therefore the Board has elected to amend its dress code consistent with its statutory authority,” according to the release.
