The United Way of Lamar County (UWLC) closed their 2018 Tax Season VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) on Friday, March 29, 2019.  VITA volunteers prepared 285 tax returns for free this year, compared to just 246 last year.  VITA is available to any household with an annual income of less than $60,000.
Jenny Wilson, UWLC Executive Director, stated “The VITA program is integral to our continued commitment to helping people in our community achieve financial stability.  On behalf of my Board of Directors, I would like to thank our wonderful VITA volunteers – Dee Jackson, Kat Craft, Ginger Higgins and Lisa Spann. Together they donated over 300 volunteer hours preparing tax returns for our citizens.”
Those still needing to file taxes can use the MyFreeTaxes.com online, free tax filing program.
Wilson explains, “MyFreeTaxes.com is a partnership between the United Way and H&R Block.  It is free to any household with an income of $66,000 or less. It is very simple and easy to use and takes most people under an hour to file their taxes.  All that is required is an email address.”
Over 50 Lamar County residents have already filed their 2018 taxes using MyFreeTaxes.com and over 90 used it last year.
