Robert Larry Hughes 76, of Paris, died at 1:36 PM, Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Paris Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are set for 2:00 PM, Monday, June 3, 2019 in the chapel of Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Norris officiating. Burial will follow in East Post Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Larry was born March 25, 1943 in Deport, Texas to Coy Robert and Elsie Lee Couch Hughes. He graduated from Paris High School in 1961 and married Wanda Jean McCoin on July 19, 1963 at the Woodland United Methodist Church. She died on their wedding anniversary in 2005. He had worked at Austin Shoe Store, Belk Department Store, Bealls Department Store, Ayres, Famous Shoe Store, and retired from Babcock & Wilcox in July of 1998. He also worked for Turner International Pipe until 2000 and then went to work for PISD and again retired from NLISD in 2012. He couldn’t sit still long enough for “retirement life”, so he joined his Liberty National Bank family in August of 2017. Larry was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Known as “G-Dad”, he dearly loved his granddaughter and two great-granddaughters who were his pride and joy. He loved spending every minute possible with them. He loved his friends and community and especially enjoyed seeing everyone at local events he was involved with such as the RRV Fair, Paris Police Department, Kiwanis Club, Hopewell VFD, and his coffee buddies at McKee’s. We will miss seeing him working out in his yard, cooking in the kitchen, sitting in his lawn chair in the front yard waiting for his next friend to stop by for a visit, playing dominos on Monday evenings, or with his rod and reels headed to his fishing spot. He had a heart of gold and will truly be missed by all.
Survivors include his granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Hughes Lawler and husband, Cody Dale Lawler; his great-granddaughters, Brooke and Peyton Lawler; his sister, Carolyn Hughes Spencer and husband, Fred Spencer; his daughter-in-law, Teresa Hughes Allen; and his nephews, Jeff and Adam Spencer. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Tab Hughes on September 14, 2005 and his parents, Coy Robert and Elsie Hughes.

Pallbearers will be Stephen “Red” Holmes, Tommy Malone, Alan Weatherford, Bill Sikes, William Woods, Will Campbell, and Leslie Howie. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Clark, Weldon Foster, Art Jones, Kenny Icenhower, Tommy Archer, Marshall Sugg, and his coffee buddies, Fred Spencer, Ralph Spencer, Johnny Hodges, and Jim Coplin.

If desired, donations may be made to a memorial in the name of Robert Larry Hughes for NLISD Education Foundation.
