RECALL: Hill’s expands pet food recall because of excess Vitamin D

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is expanding on its nationwide recall of canned dog food with potentially toxic levels of vitamin D.

The products now being added to the recall included eight types of Science Diet and Prescription Diet canned food, as well as more units of the products recalled earlier.

According to the FDA, excess vitamin D in the diet can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D at toxic levels can cause kidney failure and death.

Hill’s initial recall involved 675,000 cases—or 13.5 million cans—and led to an unknown number of pet illnesses and deaths.

Pet owners whose dogs have been eating the recalled brands and are showing these symptoms should contact their veterinarians.
