Kia is recalling nearly 260,000 vehicles because the plates in the cars’ ceiling can become detached, potentially hitting drivers and passengers.
According to documents posted online by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, upon deployment of the side curtain airbags, the headliner plate(s) may detach from the headliner, increasing the risk of injury to an occupant.
The recall affects all 2012 and 2013 Kia Optimas.
All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer. Dealers will add an industrial-grade adhesive tape over the left and right headliner plates to further secure the plates to the headliner. Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses.
