Each year Paris Junior College holds a Veteran’s Day ceremony at the DeShong Chapel to mark the day and honor PJC students lost to war. To help mark the United States World War I Centennial, PJC will also join the national Bells of Peace ceremony.

PJC’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held this Friday, Nov. 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the DeShong Chapel. During the ceremony, “In Flander’s Field,” family remembrances are shared, and the names of students who lost their lives in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam are read as the bells in the DeShong Chapel carillon toll.

Afterward, PJC students who are veterans present a wreath at the PJC war memorial followed by a playing of “Taps.”

On Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11:00 a.m. local time, the DeShong Chapel carillon bells will ring as part of a national ceremony. At 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, the fighting ended. Bells tolled around the world to mark the end of the Great War. The Texas WWI Centennial Commemoration has asked for participation in Bells of Peace: A World War One Remembrance to honor the 116,516 American men and women who died in WWI.

Conceived and designed in collaboration with the nation’s veterans of service with the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the bell tolling provides a solemn reminder of the sacrifice and service of veterans of World War I, and all veterans.
