On May 1, Officers responded to the 3800 block of Lamar in regards to a theft. The suspect had previously left the scene after stealing lawn equipment. Personnel at the complaining business had video/photographic evidence of the suspect and officers were able to identify the suspect as well as the vehicle involved in the theft. Lamar County Deputies stopped the vehicle on an unrelated call and the driver, who was not involved in the theft, was questioned. The positive identity of the suspect was established and some property was recovered. It was established that the suspect had multiple arrest and convictions for previous theft cases, making this a Felony offense. The case remains open and under investigation at this time.
On May 1, Officers were directed to a “Man With a Gun” incident in the 2000 block of S. Collegiate. Witnesses stated that a known subject had began shooting individuals at the scene with an “Orbeez” gun which shoots rehydrated gel balls. One of the victims advised that he had grabbed the suspect to make him stop shooting, and when he released him the suspect went to a backpack and produced a tan colored handgun. As officers responded the known suspect, hearing the sirens, fled on foot, leaving the backpack and weapons in a trash can. The Orbeez gun as well as a tan BB pistol resembling a Glock handgun were recovered from a trash can at the location. The victims had believed the Glock style BB Gun to be a real firearm. The case remains under investigation.
On May 4, a call of shots fired drew officers to the 600 block of SE 24th. Witnesses advised they had heard arguing and then multiple shots. The officer checked the scene and located spent shell casings in the roadway. Witnesses had seen a vehicle leave the scene at a high rate of speed, and a subject on foot running behind a business in the area. Officers could locate no victims and no damage in the area.
Officers made 47 traffic stops, 13 adult arrest, and answered 305 calls for service during this reporting period.
